GLOSSARY Anhyzer: A throw that is designed to go against the natural angle of the disc. Beefy: A "beefy disc" is an overstable disc that can handle a big throw without turning over. A "beefy drive" is a shot that goes farther than anticipated. Bottom Stamp: Bottom-stamped discs have no markings on the top of the disc, but instead are stamped on the underside. Casual Water: Bodies of water other than those that have been specifically designated by the director prior to the start of the round as out-of-bounds or those that have been specifically designated by the director prior to the start of the round as not being casual water. Fade: A disc's tendency to tail off to the left at the end of its flight (for RHBH). Falling Putt: A putt after which a player touches his or her marker disc, or any object beyond the lie, including the playing surface, before having demonstrated full control of balance. Flex: When the disc will return back to the natural fade, creating an ‘S’ curve. Flippy: See Understable. Griplock: A shot that is released later than intended. Helix: A often used for getting around complex obstacles that results in an s-shaped or backwards s shaped pattern. Hyzer: A throw that takes advantage of the natural angle of the disc. Most common is the right hand backhand hyzer which will fade to the left. Leak: Refers to the late flight fade. If the shot hyzers out too soon it "leaked out." Mando: Mandatory - "an object or objects that the disc must pass in a designated manner on its way to the hole." - PDGA rules. Mandos are utilized to improve safety, add difficulty and enhance flow. Marker: A miniature disc used to mark a player's lie. Also called mini. Overstable: For RHBH throwers, a disc that has a tendency to fade to the left when thrown and released at a level angle. Pancake: An overhand shot thrown with considerably less power that flattens out upsidedown. The disc generally lands face down. RHBH: Right-handed, back-hand thrower. Roller: A method used to make the disc roll on it's side, often used to go under obstacles or cover a great distance across uninterrupted terrian. Sandbagger: A tournament player who competes in a division below his or her skill level. Shank: A throw that very much takes off in the wrong direction. Shule: Thick rough. Bushes, branches, thorns, etc. Stable: A disc that has a tendency to fly in a straight path when released at a level angle. T.D.: Tournament Director. Taco: A shell with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and other great condiments. A disc that smacks into something so hard it bends into a taco shape. Thumber: An overhand throw that involves placing the thumb inside the lip of the disc resulting in a flight pattern useful for going over or around difficult obstacles. Tomahawk: The disc is released from a verticle angle, causing the disc to fly very high and return to the ground upside-down. Turnover: The flight of a disc that curves to the right when thrown flat or at hyzer. A less overstable or understable disc will generally be easier to turn over. Understable: For RHBH throwers, a disc that has a tendency to turn to the right when thrown and released at a level angle. |
